Latest music sample - my current project

Me and my mate Bri are working on a big prog rock project. Progress is slow but here’s a glimse of an intro section we are working on which is a the second (heavier) part of a 10 minute song where the first 5 mins is quite atmospheric and “eerie”.

It’s very rough, still lots to do on it and it’s basic as yet, but it’s an idea of the kind of stuff we are working on. We hope to gig with this stuff when it’s finished so we’ll need a prog rock keyboard player, drummer and singer.

Don’t You Know About That Girl? by Tension

Another old song from my first band. This is one of my favourites. I particularly love the words which are about a boyfriend jealously warning another guy (who’s been eyeing his girlfriend up all night) to leave off.

They are more boastful and arrogant than angry or threatening words, and I love the irony that if he really believed the words he was saying, there would be absolutely no need to say them.

In my opinion this song is a top quality pop song, skilfully written, which tragically, few have heard (so far).

Lyrics (Copyright Paddy Wilkinson 1983 2008)

Hey you, what’s on your mind? I can see do you think I’m blind?
Now you’ve been watching that girl all night long
Well it shows, what you’re thinking or is it just the beer your drinking?
It’s plain to see that look in your eye
Come a little closer, a word in your ear

Don’t you know about that girl?
She’s got something special - she’s not the hurting kind.
Well don’t you know about that girl?
Haven’t you heard?
Haven’t you heard she’s mine?
She’s mine

Well I know she looks all right - the way she wears her clothes so tight
Now you’ve been hoping to get to know her tonight
You followed her across the floor, hoping for something more
Than just a dance - a take a chance oh ho
Let me pass, some information to you

Don’t you know about that girl?
She’s got something special - she’s not the hurting kind.
Well don’t you know about that girl?
Haven’t you heard?
Haven’t you heard she’s mine?
She’s mine

I’m sorry friend, it’s got to end
Your gonna have to turn your attention to another girl
This one I can trust and pretty soon she must be back with me to take her home

Well don’t you know about that girl?
She’s got something special - she’s not the hurting kind.
Well don’t you know about that girl?
Haven’t you heard?
Haven’t you heard she’s mine?
She’s mine

Well don’t you know about that girl?
She’s got something special - she’s not the hurting kind.
Well don’t you know about that girl?
Haven’t you heard?
Haven’t you heard she’s mine?
She’s mine
She’s mine
She’s mine

Well she’s mine (she’s mine)
Well she’s mine (she’s mine)
So get off (she’s mine)
Cos she’s mine

Not Another Love Song by Tension

I’m very proud of the first band I was in. It was the 1980s and we were called Tension. The band later changed its name to The Popups which I wasn’t keen on. Although we all had our input and helped develop the songs they were all written by Paddy Wilkinson who I rate as a great pop song writer and undiscovered talent.

We had a time when we were very popular with the local Sheffield Radio stations but failed to capitalise on it. Radio Hallam and Radio Sheffield both had us into their studios to record sessions which were played on the radio. Radio Hallam even paid us. We also recorded an embarrassing radio interview for Radio Sheffield.

Radio Hallam in particular seemed to really like us and they played our songs for many months. Beverly Chubb was in charge of music at Radio Hallam and she really liked us as did DJ Dave Kilner who even came to see us live. Another Radio Hallam DJ called Brian Westlake was seriously into us and played our songs a lot saying very complimentary things indeed.

Unfortunately we have no good quality recordings of Tension but there are some half-decent ones. However, I feel the quality of the songs themselves still hold up today and believe if they were re-recorded or even played live by a band today, people would really like them.

Here’s a recording of one of our catchiest songs although they were all very catchy pop songs -

Why do UFOs always have lights?

There’s another UFO story in the news this morning as, “Several viewers contacted the BBC about strange lights that appeared in the night sky over Merseyside.” ( Mobile phone UFO footage )

The thing that’s always puzzled me about UFOs, and I’ve never heard anyone else echo this thought, is why do they always have lights - often flashing lights? If UFOs are from galaxies light years away and inhabited by aliens with vastly superior technology to us, why would they need lights? Why would they often have red flashing lights?

Even we now have excellent night vision cameras. We also have anti collision sensors. I find it hard to believe that far advanced civilisations would need crude lights on their spacecraft.

Free online game: Boulder Basher 2

I’ve just spent half an hour playing an extremely simple online game. The game plays in your browser and loads very quickly.

It consists of a single screen with some cartoon houses that you need to protect in a valley. Towering either side of the houses are cliffs where little men keep popping up and throwing boulders at your houses.

You protect them by drawing simple lines with the mouse which deflect the boulders back. This not only protects the houses but by drawing the lines at certain angles you can try to direct the boulders back to kill the nasty little men. The lines you draw last only a few seconds and you can only draw two on screen at a time.

As with most of the best games the idea is extremely simple and I found it quite addictive and fun.
